Qualifications and Requirements for Lighting Technicians
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Technical Theater, Sound, Lights, A/V preferred.
- Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience with live theatrical and musical performances.
- Technical Skills: Proficient in programming and operating lighting systems such as Pathport, Wholehog, and ETC. Knowledge of network-based lighting distribution and routine maintenance of conventional and intelligent lighting fixtures. Strong programming and operational experience with HOG, GrandMa, Avolites, and EOS systems.
- Additional Skills: Experience in running and maintaining lighting networks, controls, and interfacing with other software like QLab and Coolux media servers. Basic troubleshooting and maintenance on conventional and intelligent lighting fixtures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lighting Operations: Program, position, operate, and maintain all lighting, show control, and haze/low fog systems in various entertainment venues.
- Collaboration: Work closely with the Head Sound and Light Technician to ensure all related consumables are replenished and available.
- Equipment Management: Set up, dismantle, and maintain lighting equipment. Inspect and maintain the lighting rig, and assist in lighting pre-set.
- Show Support: Operate follow spot during performances and rehearsals, and as needed, operate the lighting console. Replace other technicians at different positions during shows as required.
- Training and Oversight: Oversee training of local follow spot operators and call spot cues. Ensure safety and security of lighting installations at all times.
- Maintenance and Repairs: Assist with maintenance, repair, and modification of lighting equipment. Attend weekly maintenance and focus calls, and update lighting department archives.
- Load-In and Load-Out: Assist with the Load-In and Load-Out of all show equipment. Follow and support the equipment and inventory management procedures.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to standards and regulations pertaining to the safety of lighting equipment, and comply with safe working methods.
Desired Attributes:
- Collaboration and Creativity: Ability to work collaboratively and have a creative eye for providing programming support for non-scripted shows and events.
- Communication: Strong communication skills, with the ability to manage personnel and handle multiple tasks efficiently.
- Tech-Savvy: Familiarity with Microsoft software for Windows. Fluency in spoken and written English is essential; any additional language is an asset.
